Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a treatment technique that is becoming more popular today. This method involves bilateral stimulation (ex: following hands back and forth with your eyes) while you process traumatic memories. EMDR’s goal is to help you heal from trauma or other distressing life events and has been proven to be effective by several studies.
A lot of individuals may assume EMDR as not a good treatment option for them because it brings up hard, traumatizing, events from the past. However, EMDR is not harmful because it does not “add” or “subtract” any events from you. EMDR simply allows you to deeply process things you have already overcome, but still may bother or trigger you often. EMDR also requires specific training and certification by clinicians to ensure the clients wellness.
EMDR has been proven to treat anxiety, phobias, PTSD, and other disorders. There have also been studies proving the effectiveness EMDR can provide individuals with ADHD or OCD. There are several benefits to EMDR. Resolution of trauma, better sleep quality, and improved relationships are just some of the benefits EMDR can offer.
Lastly, our brains have a unique way of holding onto distressing events. Some events can be resolved with time or personal growth while others need help processing. There is no shame in what events our brains hold onto. EMDR can help individuals turn off the fight, flight, freeze, or faint trauma response their body may be portraying. Healing is possible with the help of EMDR therapy.
